The Francisca was a throwing axe used by the Franks and other germanic tribes going back at least as far as the Roman Empire. Tribesman would throw their fransiscas at close range to disrupt enemy formations and sow fear in the ranks of enemies who were used to dealing with more predictable projectiles, like arrows.
